HIGHTOWN fire station in Southampton opened its doors to the public in aid of charity.

Highlights included a mock rescue, complete with artificial smoke, in which firefighters using ladders rescued a damsel in distress.

The open day also provided visitors with a chance to dress up as a firefighter.

More than 2,000 people attended the event, which is thought to have raised a large sum for The Fire Fighters' Charity and the Rainbow Trust, which helps couples with a seriously ill child.

Some of the firefighting equipment on show was supplied by crews based at the Redbridge and St Mary's fire stations.
