A HAMPSHIRE police station was at the centre of a large-scale evacuation following a fire scare.

More than 30 officers and personnel left the Southampton Central Police Station when alarms sounded at the 7.30pm last night.

The height and nature of the eight-storey building prompted Hampshire Fire and Rescue to send more than 25 firefighters in five fire engines and a number of specialist vehicles to the headquarters in Southern Road where there were reports of the smell of smoke.

Resources included crews from Hightown, St Mary’s and Redbridge stations, the Area Ladder Platform from Eastleigh and two command vehicles.

They searched the building to discover no sign of fire and put it down to a fault with the alarms thought to be caused by engineers working in the building.

It is not known whether any prisoners were in the building at the time and whether they needed to be evacuated from their cells.

Firefighters spent 20 minutes checking the building before people could return.
