A PART-time sales assistant from Southampton is set for a very merry Christmas after netting £67,414 on the National Lottery.

Kathryn Dawkins, 60, matched five numbers and the bonus ball in the Lotto draw and will now splash out on festive fun.

She told partner Tony Messom, 53, they would have to ‘cancel Christmas’ just hours before her win but the couple now plan to invest in a shiny 6ft Christmas tree to make the holiday season extra special.

But Kathryn almost didn’t buy the winning ticket from the Co-op Welcome in Blechynden Terrace, crediting the decision to a last-minute change of heart.

She said: “Every Saturday I pop around to our local garage to buy the daily paper and my Lotto tickets for that night. However, on Friday when I got off the bus from work, I went into the local Co-op to pick up some groceries. I had actually walked away from the counter when I decided to go back and buy my Lucky Dip Lotto tickets.

“I’ve absolutely no idea why I decided to do this, I really am a creature of habit, and even spookier, I said to the cashier, ‘you never know, this could be lucky for me!’ I had absolutely no idea just how lucky it would be and that it would put Christmas firmly back on the agenda in our home!”

She added: “When the lady at the other end of the line told me it was a big win I sat down on the kitchen floor in case I fell over from shock! She had to tell me the number three times and in the end I had to write the amount of the win down on my ticket so that I could see it in black and white in front of me to really believe it.”

Kathryn also plans to spend the winnings on a new kitchen and bathroom, a replacement garden fence and a new lounge suite and putting the rest aside for the future.

It comes just two weeks after a Southampton lorry driver and his partner celebrated winning more than £2 million on the Lotto.

Robert Rich, 59, and Mandy Dunn, 48 - a full-time housewife, ordered the modest meal after their Lucky Dip ticket matched the winning numbers.

The pair say the win will not change them and celebrated with a takeaway curry.
