SOUTHAMPTON will get well and truly into the festive spirit when the city’s Christmas tree lights are switched on.

Mayor Linda Norris will do the honours in Guildhall Square today with the city finally set to enjoy its own tree after almost going without one last year.

With the city council saying it could not fund a tree and just days to go to Christmas last year, the Daily Echo, Forestry Commission and a huge community operation came together to provide one next to the Bargate.

But this year the city will have its own festive tree, although it will stand proudly in Guildhall Square as opposed to Above Bar.

This year the city also has a German market along Above Bar, which includes a spectacular Flying Santa attraction which sees a high-wire artist dressed as Father Christmas throwing presents to youngsters every day.

Civic chiefs had said they were disappointed with the previous Christmas markets, and have handed the contract to German operator Wela Markt.

The Christmas tree lights will go on at 6pm, with events taking place in the square from 5.30-6.30pm and the Sing Now Choir providing the musical accompaniment.

In the run-up to Christmas there will be a host of festive events taking place around the tree. They include a Jubilee Brass concert at 6pm on December 3; a performance by the Young Players Orchestra at 4pm on December 6; the Albion Band at 6pm on December 10; a show by the Young Voices at 4pm on December 13 and the Mayor’s carol service on December 17.

Meanwhile, in Winchester, the Lantern Procession will take place at the cathedral with hundreds coming together for the event.

Homemade paper lanterns will light up the night sky at 6pm as participants walk through the city singing carols.
