IT started with a set from one of Southampton's most hotly tipped young bands and ended with a triumphant set from the city's most famous son.

Craig David rounded off the first day of Common People with what he described as the most important gig of his life.

The emotion showed as he took to the stage less than a mile from where he grew up on the city's Holyrood Estate - and wowed the crowd with classics old and new, from Fill Me In to One More Time.

Even Saints legend Matt Le Tissier was dancing in the VIP tent as he launched into Rewind with a tribute to Southampton.

Before the gig, Craig told the Daily Echo how much it meant to be back in the city.

"It's the most important show of my life tonight," he said.

"I just can't tell you how many good memories I have here.

"Walking through the Common on the way to Bellemoor Boys School, playing football. To go from standing in the crowd to being on stage is incredible. I did a couple of Power in the Parks and that was the start of it all really."

He also paid tribute to the guiding lights who watched on - from his parents to Matt Le Tisser.

"To hear that he's excited to see me perform is surreal to me. He's the Lionel Messi of Southampton!"

Wild Front had kicked off Rob da Bank's second Southampton shindig with tracks from their self-titled EP and some new material.

The festival was plagued by queues as scanned at the entrance broke down, meaning some music lovers had to wait two hours to get on site.

It did mean a chilled start to the day on the Common, which was bathed in glorious sunshine throughout.

Highlights on the main stage included a hilarious set from the Chuckle Brothers, The Sugarhill Gang delighting the audience with their big hit Rapper's Delight and Public Enemy with remixed versions of some old classics including Don't Believe The Hype.

Kids young and old took advantage of the world's biggest bouncy castle and dozens of unsigned and up and coming acts local, national and international performed on the other three stages.

Day two is headlined by Duran Duran, with sets from Katy B, Jamie Lawson, the Cuban Brothers and Chas & Dave.
