A PERSON has died after being hit by a freight train in Southampton.

British Transport Police were called to the scene on the railway line close to Southampton Central Station in the early hours of of Saturday morning.

The casualty was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by the Eastleigh to Southampton freight train.

A police spokesman said: “British Transport Police officers were called to the line close to Southampton Central on the 11th of June after a report that a person had been struck by a train.

“Officers from British Transport Police and Hampshire Police attended the incident which was reported to us at 4.38am and it is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“A medic from the local ambulance service also attended but the person was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service said: "All we can say is that we confirmed the person was deceased. We sent our HART [hazardous area response] team one ambulance and one officer."

Emergency services were unable to provide further details, such as the deceased's age or gender.

Trains were delayed on all routes through the station but cleared by 8am.
