A BODY recovered off the south coast yesterday has been identified as missing Southampton climber Liam Day.

Mr Day, 26, has been presumed dead after going missing on a solo climbing trip to Swanage on June 14.

His body was spotted by a passing vessel in water off St Alban’s Head.

It was recovered by the Swanage lifeboat at around 12pm on Tuesday and identified on Wednesday morning.

Next of kin have been informed.

Mr Day, a medical student, was reported missing by girlfriend Emily Brown on June 15, prompting an extensive search on land, air and sea.

Police believe he went deep water climbing, which involves descending a cliff in a harness and climbing back up unsupported. Climbing equipment and Mr Day’s car were found near Durlston Country Park.

The discovery of his body came two years to the day since he entered a relationship with Ms Brown, who has posted tributes on social media throughout the search.

She recently told how the light in her life had “switched off” and revealed that he was adored by her two children.

A post-mortem is due tomorrow and an inquest is expected to be opened at Bournemouth Coroner’s Court by the end of the week.
