THE scientists of the future had their chance to shine as the University of Southampton hosted the annual Southampton Schools Physicist of the Year awards.
The event celebrates the talents of students studying physics across the city’s schools.
More than 50 Year 10 and Year 12 physics students from schools in the area received awards in recognition for their efforts during the year.
Dr Sadie Jones, Outreach Leader in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southampton, said: “This award ceremony is a great opportunity for the students, their parents and teachers to celebrate their success and also get a taster of what physics at university is like.”
In addition to the awards, there was a Supernova Extravaganza! show presented by PhD student Chris Frohmaier . Chris has several exciting demonstrations which will showcase his world leading research and that of the Supernova Group.
The event is organised in collaboration with the Ogden Trust.
Prize winners received a £25 amazon gift voucher, a certificate and automatically became eligible to apply for an Ogden Trust Undergraduate Science Scholarship, worth £1,500 per annum, should they choose to study physics at a leading British university.
