FOR most students, money is a constant worry.

The rising cost of tuition fees, the scrapping of maintenance grants and renting accommodation can all mean funds are tight for textbooks, socialising and the occasional kebab.

But one Southampton student can put all her money woes behind her as she scooped a share in a £61.1million EuroMillions jackpot.

Courtney Davies, who has just completed the first year of her psychology degree at the University of Southampton, was part of a syndicate with her family that won the enormous fortune.

She says there are no plans to drop out of higher education after becoming an overnight millionaire.

Courtney, 19, and her family only won the jackpot after her mum Sonia phoned from her holiday in Florida to say she was feeling lucky.

The five-strong syndicate made up of Courtney, her sister Stephanie Davies, 23, Stephanie’s boyfriend Steve Powell, 30, their mum Sonia, 53, and Sonia’s partner Keith Reynolds, 55, from Monmouth, hit the jackpot last Friday.

As luck would have it Stephanie only purchased the six Lucky Dip tickets after receiving a call from her mother late on Friday evening.

Sonia pleaded with her daughter to buy the tickets as she was feeling lucky.

“I thought mum was mad calling me from holiday but they were so insistent I knew we had to do it,” she said as they celebrated their £61,102,442.90 win.

Courtney can now enjoy her £12,220,488.58 share of the prize while she finishes her university education.

She plans to complete her degree before deciding what to do next but is already planning on buying an electric toothbrush and a new car to replace her VW Fox.

With her new found wealth she could even purchase some of Southampton FC’s most valuable players, or almost half of the new £26.8million Studio 144 art’s complex built in Guildhall Square.

She will also have no problem affording to live in the city, where the average student house costs around £340 per month in rent.

Courtney’s psychology undergraduate degree is currently priced at £9,000 per year according to the university’s website.

Stephanie called her sister Courtney, who was in Reading with her boyfriend Kieran, 20, when they discovered they had a winning ticket, at 1.45am and shared the news.

Courtney said: “We kept repeating ‘oh my God’ to each other, over and over.

“In the end we had to say bye and hang up as we were so in shock we weren’t actually talking to each other.”

A University of Southampton spokesman said: “Congratulations to Courtney and her family. We look forward to Courtney continuing her studies with us next term.”

Courtney’s mum Sofia had been celebrating after successful keyhole surgery in the US to remove a tumour on her parathyroid gland.

The winning numbers from the EuroMillions draw on Friday were 1, 21, 26, 40, 50 and Lucky Stars 2 and 4.
