ELDERLY tenants will welcome civic chiefs to unveil major new improvements at their Southampton sheltered housing complex.

More than 140 residents at Rozel Court in Lordshill will greet city mayor Cathie McEwing today from 1pm-3pm.

Her visit celebrates the completion of improvement works that include a new lift, new mobility scooter storage, external landscaping works, and refurbishment of the community rooms.

She will be joined by community residents, contractors and other guests for a tour of the building’s transformed communal lounges and kitchens in each block. These now provide residents with a bright, modern and welcoming area to enjoy.

The new look is helping to encourage more people to take part, be active, volunteer and get out and about. Importantly, a new personal emergency alarm system means that customers who need extra support can live at home independently for longer.

New innovations, such as fall detectors, temperature sensors and bed or chair exit monitors will help to keep older and vulnerable people with assessed needs safe and secure.

One resident said: “With no room for a mobility scooter in my flat, I spent my days stuck at home but now there is a purpose-built storeroom. I have ordered a scooter so I can enjoy a much more independent lifestyle.”

Cllr Warwick Payne, city council cabinet member for Housing and Adult Care, said: “Southampton City Council is investing in communal lounges like this one to support the wellbeing of both residents and older people. With recent renovations at Rozel Court, it will be easier than ever for tenants and community residents to have a chat and share a joke in the communal lounges.”

The renovated lounges will host coffee mornings to help tenants keep fit, computer clubs, bingo and ‘coffee cake and quiz’ nights.
