ONE of Southampton's busiest roads has opened after being closed by a burst water main.
Kanes Hill - part of the A27 - had to be shut on Thursday morning after the 6in cast iron main ruptured, damaging the road and sending a river of water into nearby gardens.
Thousands of drivers had to find alternative routes through the Thornhill area of the city.
Southern Water warned that Kanes Hill could remain closed until Monday - but the damage turned out to be less severe than thought and it has now fully reopened.
A Southern Water spokesman said: "We feared there may have been a void under the road but we were unable to fully inspect this until the main was isolated and repaired.
"Once it was repaired our engineers investigated the situation fully and are confident the road is not undermined. Less work was required so the reinstatement will be a lot quicker."
