FIREFIGHTERS  tackled a blaze at a Southampton home.

More than thirty firefighters were called to a house in Mortimer Road, Woolston, after the fire broke out shortly before 8am yesterday.

Smoke billowed out of the terraced house as firefighters tackle the blaze.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said that crews had been called to reports of a fire in the roof of the building.

At least two men living there were able to flee the house with their two dogs.

One of them was treated by paramedics for smoke inhalation and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Crews from Hightown, St Mary’s and Eastleigh fire stations are at the scene.

They used one jet, two hose reels and six breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.

Five fire engines and 32 firefighters were called to the scene and police  set up a cordon while neighbours gathered outside.

Paramedics were also called to tend to one of the men.

A neighbour who did not want to give their name said he "jumped the fence" and had broken a window in an attempt to try and tackle the blaze.

He said he found a man there gathering up two dogs ready to leave.

Another younger man living there is also believed to have escaped.

Other neighbours said they saw black smoke coming from the roof, a first floor window exploding and "flames dancing" in the building.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said that crews had been called to reports of a fire in the roof of the building.

He said specialist vehicles have been called to tackle the blaze including an aerial ladder platform.

Mickey Smither, station manager at Hants fire and rescue said: "The fire began in one house and is not being treated as suspicious.

"It began in a roof space which made it difficult to access.

"Although it started in the one property, it did affect a second one but only through smoke damage.

"The fire has been put out now but we will continue to monitor the properties which are now uninhabitable."
