HUNDREDS OF Saints fans at a Southampton pub were awash with glum, disappointed faces after the EFL Cup final heartbreak.

The Alexandra Beer Emporium, in Bellevue Road, was packed out with excited and buzzing supporters ahead of kick-off as Saints aimed to make history.

Fans raised the roof throughout the Wembley showdown against Manchester United, with the atmosphere growing ever more intense as the match progressed.

The pub was heaving with people before kick-off, with some punters even climbing on chairs and tables in a bid to get a good view of the televised match.

However, the mood quietened down as the game kicked off, with nerves already starting to show among the cheers and chants.

The pub’s foundations were still shaking after the crowd exploded with joy following Manolo Gabbiadini’s first half effort – a feeling which quickly turned into disbelief after it was ruled offside.

The fans continued in high spirits and did not let the disallowed goal get them down - chanting, singing and drinking. Every set of eyes was locked on the big screen, waiting in anticipation for Saints to score again.

Towards the end of the first half, Manchester United had built up a 2-0 lead, and fans started to become desperate and frustrated as Saints continued to probe.

The crowd erupted when Saints, through Gabbiadini, scored either side of half time. The room vibrated as fans brought the house down. The belief of a cup win was back.

But United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic had other ideas, and with three minutes of the 90 remaining, the room was silenced as he headed in.

Despite Saints fighting back, fans could only watch through their fingers as the clock counted down to full time.

Four minutes of added time later, the majority of the room knew it was over and every face looked devastated as the final whistle was blown.
