WEEKLY bin collections in Southampton will end next month.
Fortnightly waste collections are to be introduced by Southampton City Council from June 5, with general waste collected one week, and recycling and glass the next.
The change is part of £42.3 million worth of savings agreed by the council when it set its budget in February.
The authority will be writing to all affected households in the coming weeks explaining the changes and advisers are being made available to help with concerns of city residents.
Cabinet member for environment and transport at the council, Jacqui Rayment said: “I can assure residents that the service will continue to be efficient and meet the needs of the city.
“We are confident that by taking a few simple actions most households will have no problem managing their waste.”
The council has issued a list of tips to help residents manage their waste, including to recycle as much as possible and not to overfill bins which they say should be done by squashing waste to maximise space.
“By recycling wherever possible, the space available in general waste bins can be maximised, whilst also benefitting the environment.”
The change will only affect houses in the city, with the majority of flats and apartments continuing to have weekly collections.
New collection calendars will be sent to residents from mid-May.
