BOSSES behind a new mass cycling event taking place in Hampshire next month have revealed the 8.5 kilometre route.

Thousands of people are expected to take part in Southampton’s first City Ride, which has replaced the annual Sky Ride event following the emergence of a new sponsor.

The traffic-free course will include historic parts of the city centre, plus parkland and Southampton Common.

It is one of 13 City Ride events being staged across the country by HSBC UK this summer as part of a campaign to get two million people on bikes by 2020.

The Southampton spectacular will be held on June 25, when cyclists from across the south will take over the streets.

Hampshire’s Joe Truman, a member of the Great Britain cycling team, said: “It’s great to see such a fantastic route, one that will give people the chance to see Southampton’s roads and green spaces from a completely different perspective.

“Hopefully, the event will inspire them to make cycling part of their everyday lives.”

Giles Morgan, HSBC’s global head of sponsorship added: “It could be a great day out for families who want to get back on their bike after allowing it to collect dust at home, or for more experienced cyclists who want to try something that’s a bit more relaxed.”

Sky Ride’s successor is being held in conjunction with British Cycling and Southampton City Council.

Mike Harris, the council’s service director, said: “We’re delighted to see HSBC UK taking over the sponsorship of this fantastic event in the city.

“You can start when you like and go round the course as many times as you like.

“You can either push yourself or take things at a more leisurely pace. There’s something for everyone and it’s an ideal day out for families, especially if you’ve got little ones.

“I’m sure there will be just as many participants as there have been in previous years.

“It’s always great to see so many people out on their bikes – and the attractions and entertainment make it just as much fun for the spectators.”

Based in Guildhall Square, City Ride will give young riders a chance to test their bike-handling skills by tackling the HSBC UK Go-Ride course.

All the events are free and people can either register their participation at letsride.co.uk or enter on the day.
