AFTER dozens of objections and complaints, a controversial kebab shop will no longer be built in Sholing.

Scores of residents made their opinions clear on a plan to create the new takeaway at 408 Portsmouth Road citing litter, traffic congestion, anti-social behaviour and environment pollution as key reasons why they objected it.

Under the plans, unit owner Ozel Ozdemir was hoping to offer kebabs, pizza and burgers from the establishment between the hours of 3pm and 11.30pm everyday.

An extraction flue, chip fry, donner kebab machine and pizza oven would also have been installed.

But Southampton City Council took the view that the shop would be "out of character" for the area and refused the plans last week.

In total 57 objections were received by the city council, denounce support for the takeaway.

Among them was Mark Cole, who lives on Portsmouth Road.

He said: "We already have two shops selling food and don't need another.

"I'm very concerned about the noise, smell, litter and extra traffic this will bring to an already overcrowded area.

"Living so close to the proposed application, I'm extremely worried that an increase in anti-social behaviour will also happen. We have suffered enough over the years and have fought hard to make things right."

Another, Shuang Ng, of Kent Street, added: "The long opening hours are unfair to those who live nearby. These long-opening hours often attract unwanted people into the neighbourhood.

"For example, people who have finished drinking and would like to buy something to [eat].

"This sometimes consist of drunk people behaviour getting out of control or shouting in the neighbourhood.

"Even if they do not to intend to cause trouble, simply a car pulling nearby can be very disturbing for people who live above."

In rejecting the proposal, a council planning official said: "The appearance, style and prominence of the flue on the side elevation would be out of character and would be harmful to the appearance of the building within the street scene.

"As such the proposal will have an unacceptable impact on visual amenity contrary to saved policies of the Development Plan Document Core Strategy Local Development Framework."
