Security alert at Southampton airport

SOUTHAMPTON airport was put on security alert this morning after staff discovered what appeared to be a chemical container in the toilets.

The Chemical Investigation Unit was called and the container was taken outside the building where a cordon was placed around it.

But the investigation was called off after the container was found to contain cooking oil.

No disruption was caused to passengers or flights.

Might have been accurate to say "minor security alert" in the headline. But hey ho, I'm an idealist when it comes to accuracy of reporting by the media.

What did they think it was? Some magic liquid that turns itself into a bomb, in a bottle that can walk undetected on board a plane?

The giveaway was the label on the bottle that said harpic toilet cleaner.

Cooking oil--is this another fare reducing scheme whereby passengers do their own on-board catering?

Why would you keep cooking oil in a toilet cleaner bottle?

Well it gave security something to do. I found a bag of left duty free in the toilets there, the copper I gave it to wasn't interested.
