TWO people appeared in court yesterday in connection with an attack that left a cyclist fighting for his life.

John Smith, 16, of Laundry Road, Southampton, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent to David Baker, as well as stealing two packs of beer from the Co-op.

Co-accused, Stefanie Hill, 18, of Lydgate Road, Southampton, pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Smith was further remanded in custody to be sentenced after Hill’s trial at the city crown court, which has yet to be fixed.

Judge Patrick Hooton heard Smith had a previous conviction for causing actual bodily harm to a Botley resident.

Police launched a major investigation in June after the 14-year-old was found battered and bruised in a cutway at Southampton’s Central Bridge. A passer-by reported the attack, which happened shortly before midnight on June 8 as David was cycling home. His mother, Jane, released pictures of her son as he lay in a coma.
