SeaCity ticket giveaway slammed

An artists impression of the SeaCity Museum An artists impression of the SeaCity Museum

Opposition councillors have accused city council chiefs of a “political stunt” ahead of council elections, by offering a free ticket giveaway to Southampton’s new £15m Titanic museum for every household in the city.

Nearly 100,000 city households, and all council staff, will be sent letters in coming weeks offering groups of two adults and three children or three adults free entry, worth up to £25, to the new SeaCity museum.

It is due to open on April 10, to mark 100 years since the White Star liner set sail from Southampton on its ill-fated maiden voyage.

But Labour questioned how the cash-strapped council could afford the giveaway and complained the costs were not clearly identified in Tory budget proposals to save £14m over the next year.

Labour group leader Richard Williams said: “If it looks like a stunt, smells like a stunt, then it’s probably a stunt.”

The council said it would only lose up to £80,000 in income from the 12,000 city residents it predicted would have paid to visit.

Ian Woodland, from the Unite union, said: “Our members will be questioning the expense when we are forever being told by the council it has got no money. £80,000 could have been used to protect services, jobs and wages.

Good on the council for offering free passes to Southampton residents. They deserve something for free after the refuse fiasco that they had to endure during 2011. I don't think that it will have any impact on the election results, but I am sure that families with children will appreciate a free day out.

If they are to be given out at a cost to taxpayers then i suggest the following:-
.
They are NOT given to anyone in arrears with their Council Tax.
.
They are NOT given to ayone who is a Non Council Tax payer.
.
And are not freely given away as "goodwill gesture" to all an sundry.

Doesn't the local council have a duty of care to protect the finance's of the city?

Giving away £80k is not in my opinion protecting the city's finance's.

When the parking wardens and toll collectors were on strike, the council (Royston Smith in particular) was complaining about the loss of income, it seems okay now that the council need a voting bribe.

I'd rather they spend £80k on adult social care or providing, 4 youth workers on a years contract.

The giveaways can not be used during the school holidays so it will not help parents that much and I expect the cost would have already been covered out of our taxes anyway

Given the propsed admission prices it seems to me that the freebe day is the only occasion when this white elephant will be visited!
A total waste of money in all respects, if all Sotonians take up their free offer, when on earth are they likely to pay to visit the museum again, or maybe thay will wait until the next freebe in 2112 --oh no by that time the museum will have been closed for 99 years through lack of support.

this is NOT a good idea when it costs money, there are obviously costs around this such as printing/posting letters, printing tickets for those that wants them, admin time/overheads not to mention the 'lost potential revenue'. Someone hasn't thought this through properly! why don't they just have a few open days for everyone and then just charge the normal after that. If they're confident enough that this will draw visitors that should suffice.... I feel like boycotting the whole thing because of the lack of transparency around not only this but the whole flipping project!

you have my vote, why is it that the Labour group are totally incapable of supporting anything that promotes the city and attracts visitors? All the socialists want to do is increase your council tax and spend it on non jobs like outreach workers and coordiators at inflated salary, just to appease their union puppet masters.
Actually the cost will only be in lost revenue and equates to an opening promotion by word of mouth, tell your friends if its good and the reputation will sell a lot more tickets in the future

Why can't Labour be honest about it? only if a set amount of the 100,000 citizens & all the council workers would have gone to pay to visit the museum would £80,000 not been collected. we as a city aren't paying out £80,000 for people to come it's just a predicted income not a factual one.
So is this a stunt? is Labours response a means to increase their vote?
let's be honest exactly how many residents would pay to go?

What it really is FM2 is that Smithy realise he has a white elephant on his hands and this is a way to boost the visiting numbers up.
Yes its a stunt all right, a stunt to make a fasle claim on on paying people numbers.

Portsmouth residents were not given a free ticket for the Spinnaker Tower, but they do get a reduced price on admission when they show a bill that shows their name and address.

Instead of giving free entry to one and all, that is going to cost an estimated £80,000, why not do the same and give Southampton residents reduced admission?

That way the residents would get a good deal and it would cost the Council less.

Did i miss the trick or something if it costs up to £25 pounds to get in and 100,000 tickets are given away isnt the lost going to be in the region of £2.5m or has the echo exaggerated the admission price and if it was paid for by Our monies (taxes) should it not be free entry as we are co owners you will not find me going in just to look at pictures i can find on any web site and if the artifacts are the same that was at the other sea museum then i seen them anyways so what is the exciting bit about this one i proberly have more titanic memorabilia that they have including signatures books pictures and the like.

But not everyone will get in free only residents & council workers.
I admit this was bad timing but the stuff being posted is way over the top.
I went to Canterbury Cathedral it cost for me & my wife £16 or £8 each the £25 quoted from what I've read is a family ticket.
I actually thought it was wrong paying to go into a church but travelled all that way so did,
If you don't agree with the museum ( any of you) & you live in the city then don't use your ticket simples

But if, as residents, they were given cut-price admission, only those that were interested would attend, and it would cost considerably less than the £80,000 quoted.

Another point is, as they are interested, they would probably attend more than once whereas a hell of a lot would go, just because it was free, and not 'darken the doors' again.

With regard your visit to Canterbury Cathedral. I would not visit if I were expected to pay an admission fee. However, with free admission, I would always make a contribution.

Money well spent then.

Better to spend £5m now then lose £500m from utter incompetence or from those who would just award themselves oodles of cash to justify an existence.

I congratulate the Council on this project, anybody with a micron of grey matter understands that you need visitors to a city who spend money & to promote it, rather than build a huge great wall around it.

Is there some sort of loophole for the Council to claim back the VAT element of the Building Works, if they offer the So'ton Residents free admission, and call it a Cultural Event ?
If it saves the Council Money, then why not ?
20% VAT on £15M, is £3M.
If every resident goes and admission is say £12.50 (200,000 x £12.50 = £2.5M).
Perhaps someone at the Customs and Excise can validate this ?

Many of the ones who would go with free tickets wouldn't go if they had to pay but if the price was low then many would go out of interest or because they are interested in our past.
I went to Canterbury as my wife wanted to go to the Cathedral.
Once there if we hadn't gone in there was nothing else to do so we paid.
I love the Thai way of doing it.
Linesman might like it as well & that is Thai people ( Sot'on residents) don't pay but outsiders do as they have every right to see their(our) history.
the benefits come from the money spent in small cafe/takeaway's near to the museums & taxi services & selling souvenirs
Thailand is geared up for tourism & make this way pay so I do wonder why we couldn't?
maybe sell a glossy magazine of the museum to visitors?
I'm not against a Titanic /Maritime museum I do feel it should have been built sympathetically to the city centre.
To attract tourists & visitors to this city to bring much needed employment money will have to be spent thats why I can't understand why so many on here are against it.
FM2 I'm trying to be friendly so please take this in a friendly manner but with the latest news according to Liverpool council being the docks could lose a lot of cruise trade do you think this could make the Bio Mass more of a possibility?
ABP & the parent company will be looking for more of that type of revenue.
What's your thoughts on that?

We could have king canute trying to stop the waves & then going back to his palace.
We could have the Pilgrim Fathers boarding their ships.
We could have Henry the Eighth entering the Red Lion Pub in which he stayed.
We could also have the citizens fighting off the French at the city walls.
All these things would attract visitors to the city those visitors would spend money & in historical sites where they do this they attract large crowds.
I would do anything to show the world this cities history & not only would it attract visitors it would be a fun way to educate our young on this cit's great history.

Are you trying re-write history??!! Labour inherited the best economy ever inherited by an incoming government! Not only did they completely waste it they compounded it by creating a Credit Bubble and a Property Bubble, both of which burst! Make no mistake, the reason we are in the mire is not because of the bankers, it is because we had a Labour government who madly overspent our money.
