A Southampton man has died and a woman is critically ill after a 60-foot cliff fall.

Police say they believe they are treating the incident, which happened in Jersey, as a tragic accident.

They have named the dead man as holidaymaker Peter Scurr, 69, from Southampton.

An eyewitness called emergency services to the scene shortly after 5pm yesterday, after spotting Mr Scurr losing his footing and falling approximately 20 metres on to the concrete roof at the entrance to the German tunnels below Railway Walk in St Aubin on the island.

A 65-year-old woman who was with him, who has not been named, was then seen to grab some tree branches but also fall shortly afterwards.

Mr Scurr was pronounced dead at the scene, but the woman was treated by paramedics and specialist firefighters before being taken to Jersey General Hospital in St Helier, where she was today said to be seriously ill in intensive care.

She was today due to be flown to Southampton General Hospital for further treatment to her "multiple injuries".

Jersey Police are investigating the death, but said in a statement officers are treating it as a "tragic accident" and are now preparing a file for the Deputy Viscount, the island's coroner.
