Australian billionaire Clive Palmer unveils plans for Titanic II
12:58pm Wednesday 18th July 2012 in Southampton
By Keith Hamilton, Shipping & Heritage Reporter
The Australian billionaire, Clive Palmer, who plans to build Titanic II, reveals plans and blueprints for the ambitious project.
FIRST dismissed out of hand as an eccentric billionaire’s fantasy, plans to build a replica of Southampton ’s illfated liner, Titanic , have taken a step closer to reality.
If the vessel is built the Australian mining magnate behind the plan, Clive Palmer, says Titanic II will be sailing up Southampton Water in 2016.
However there is still deep scepticism that this ambitious project will never set sail.
Southampton shipping historian, Terry Yarwood, said: “Frankly I do not think there will be the desire to travel on a vessel named, Titanic, so inextricably linked to the most famous of shipping disasters.
“Many believe the name is jinxed.”
But the Queensland businessman, who made headlines when he announced plans to construct a modern-day Titanic, featuring 840 cabins, in April this year, is convinced his idea will be a winner.
Mr Palmer has now caused further controversy, when he revealed detailed drawings and blueprints of the ship, by banning pensioners from the proposed vessel’s casino.
He said it would be restricted to first class passengers, to ensure those who could not afford to lose money would not be allowed to enter.
Mr Palmer said: “There’ll be some sort of screening process, and as we will be in international waters we’ll probably be able to stop pensioners from entering.’’ Mr Palmer has signed a letter of intent with a Chinese shipyard and commissioned a number of ship design and marine engineering companies to ensure the planned ship will be compliant with all current safety and construction regulations.
Slightly wider than the original Titanic to improve “stability’’, the new 40,000-ton ship would feature a number of key differences including the addition of a “safety deck’’ with “proper lifeboats’’.

This is great news, lets hope does come off, I was very privileged as a young mush born in Southampton in the era of the 'Mary and Lizzy' me and my old mates used to rush down to the Docks instead of school, so that we could help clean these great Lady's of the sea, but to see a replica of the Titanic would be the Icing on the cake for me and many more of my age.

'Southampton's ill fated liner' ?? Wasn't it registered in Liverpool?

Do not try to re-write history, the Titanic was, whether you like it or not, a Liverpool registered ship.

It is down to Belfast. Nothing to do with the guys that built it, but short cuts taken by the company responsible for quality to cut cost. ie Crap Rivets, Bulk heads not high enough and so on.

The Titanic was built for and owned by the White Star Line whose headquarters where Albion House (also known as the White Star Building) which is a Grade II* listed building located in Liverpool, England. It was constructed between 1896 and 1898 and is positioned on the corner of James Street and the Strand across from the Pier Head.
The ship was also registered in Liverpool, so I think you should agree that this ship had nothing to do with Southampton except for using it as a base to operate from.

Just for your information , yes I am a born and bred Liverpudlian and I have in the past lived in South Wales and Coventry. However I have lived near Liverpool for the last 36 years.
Thanks to the web I contribute when necessary to your paper, factual information when I feel that inaccurate and misleading things are said about my home city.
Liverpool is in no way perfect , but having seen items in this paper concerning Southampton , the same can also be said about this city.
The difference between you and I, is that I am proud of my city . You on the other hand by your outbursts of bad language towards me and even other people from Southampton, show nothing but contempt and hatred to me and the city of Southampton. I would like to suggest on behalf of everyone who contributes to this forum .........
GROW UP , HAVE A LITTLE MORE RESPECT FOR YOURSELF AND OTHER PEOPLE .
