CAROLS filled the air as Christmas officially began in Winchester as the festive lights were switched on in the city this evening.
More than 6,000 people turned out to celebrate the start of the Perfect English Christmas and see performances from local dance group Intergr8, the Winchester Military Wives Choir and a small skit from this year's Theatre Royal pantomime Sleeping Beauty.
The lights came on at 6pm as Concept, a Hampshire boy band who featured on X Factor earlier this year but didn't get past the judges houses, entertained the crowds followed by a laser and music display in the sky.
