COUNCILS across Hampshire have announced their collection timetables for bins over Christmas and the new year.

With people across the county set to throw out the remains of the Christmas dinner, wrapping paper and festive trees councils have announced when bin lorries will be out and about over the next fortnight.

From Christmas Day onwards, collection days in Southampton will be pushed back by up to three days until January 19, when normal collections will resume.

There will also be no garden waste collections until January 5, while the city council has announced that Christmas trees can be collected between January 12 and 23.

Anyone wanting their tree to be collected should leave it at the edge of the property boundary on their normal rubbish collection day.

Trees can also be disposed of free of charge at the Household Waste Recycling Centre in First Avenue, Millbrook, which will be open apart from on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

The city council’s environment and transport Cabinet member, Jacqui Rayment, said: “I’d like to thank our residents for all their recycling efforts during 2014.

“Every additional one per cent of recycling collected saves us £50,000 each year, so every item recycled really does make a difference.

“Residents should be mindful that they can recycle a whole range of items over Christmas including cans, glass bottles and jars and cardboard.

“Keep up the good work in 2015.”
