IT wasn’t quite the celebrations they were hoping for – as decorations went up in flames on New Year’s Eve.

Revellers had the fun cut short just minutes after midnight when holly hanging over a light fitting caught fire.

The 20-strong group had gone outside the property, in Upper Wield, north of Alresford, to ring in the new year.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesperson said when they returned there was a “significant” fire in the dining room, which revellers put out using a fire extinguisher.

The wall and ceiling was damaged after the holly fell on other decorations and furniture.

Now fire officers are urging people to think carefully about where festive decorations are hung.

Group manager Ryan Thurman said: “Although the decorations will soon be coming down, this is a timely reminder.

“If you still have holly or any other decorations up make sure they are placed well away from lights or sources of heat. Christmas lights should be turned off if you are going out and, of course, ensure all candles or tea lights are out before you go to bed.

“This group were extremely lucky they were able to catch the fire in time but someone else might not be so fortunate.”
