MORE than 60 cars and motorbikes were destroyed after they were engulfed in a blaze in a Hampshire village.

The vehicles were being kept in seven sheds in Stoney Lane, Medstead, when the fire broke out at around 9.30pm last night.

An unattended bonfire spread to the corrugated-roofed sheds where the used vehicles were being repaired.

Though no one is believed to have been injured, the bikes and cars were “severely damaged” by the fire as the sheds were “wiped out”, according to a Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman.

The vehicles were in the process of being renovated when the fire took hold.

The owner of the workshop, Charles Wooster, said the fire was believed to have started when a bonfire started by his brother spread to the out buildings.

"It was probably started that way but we are not 100 percent sure,' Mr. Wooster explained. 'My brother was burning some rubbish."

Charles estimated the value of the bikes lost to be far more than £20,000.

Three pumps were sent out, two from Winchester and one from Alton.

Hampshire Fire group manager Ryan Thurman said: “We understand a bonfire had been lit earlier in the day and left. Then it appears that it caught one of the huts. If people do light a bonfire make sure they are maintained until absolutely out. This is the sort of thing that can happen as a result.”
