WOULD-BE thieves made a brazen attempt to steal money from a cashpoint by trying to pull the machine from a garage forecourt in Hampshire.

Police believe a silver VW Transporter people carrier, or similar vehicle, pulled up at the Texaco garage at around 3am on Monday, July 13, before a chain was put around the outside of the ATM machine.

The driver then used the van to try and pull the cashpoint from its base but couldn’t do so. The empty-handed thieves then drove off leaving the chain behind.

The incident caused £5,000-worth of damage to the machine but it remained in place and no cash was taken.

Officers are now appealing for witnesses who may have seen the incident or the vehicle in the area around the Texaco Petrol Station at Bullington Lane, Sutton Scotney.

They would also like to hear from anyone who may have any information about who is responsible.

A CCTV still of the incident has been released in a bid to help find those behind the attempted theft.

Anyone with any information can call PC Philip Holderness Corps based in Winchester on 101. or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
