A DRIVER had a lucky escape after his car ended up upside down in a ditch at the bottom of a garden.

The incident which happened in Kerrfield near Winchester last night saw the driver’s BMW X5 on its roof after it left the road and crashed into the garden.

Two fire engines from Winchester Fire Station were called to the scene and residents gathered outside after hearing the commotion outside.

Paramedics from South Central Ambulance treated the driver, an elderly man who had managed to crawl out of the car.

Crew manager at Winchester Fire Station Nick Mills said: “This man is very lucky to suffer no serious injuries.

He has had a very lucky escape he has come off the road and lost control and come down the hill and through the sloping garden.”

Mr Mills praised the actions of the 11 fire-fighters who attended the incident, he added: “We do come across strange incidents all the time but we adapt our methods and equipment, and it’s not every day you find a car in a ditch at the bottom of a garden.”

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service, said they were called at 8.16pm and sent an ambulance crew and a Hazardous Area Response Team.

She said they treated the driver at the scene and he was then taken to Southampton General Hospital for treatment.
