FILMING of a £100m TV series in a Hampshire city is continuing today.

As reported, Winchester has become awash with activity as cameras rolled into the city and streets were transformed to look like wartime Britain - and a Hollywood star has been spotted on the set, as well as enjoying a roast dinner in a local pub.

The series called The Crown, tells the story of Queen Elizabeth’s early reign, and features former Dr Who Matt Smith playing Prince Philip and Claire Foy as Elizabeth II, as well as veteran American actor John Lithgow.

Today scenes were filmed at The Great Hall, which is currently closed off to the public and will also be shut on today and tomorrow for derigging.

However it hasn’t stopped scores of interested onlookers taking pictures of the set to see if they can catch a glimpse of the stars of the show.

On Sunday a bomb crater was seen in the middle of Canon Street, and parts of College Street were shut off for filming, situated around the main set were historic cars, and extras and actors dressed in suitable fashion from the 1930s and 40s.

One of the stars of The Crown is American actor John Lithgow who plays the role of Winston Churchill.

He is well-known for starring in US comedy series 3rd Rock from the Sun which ran in the 1990s, he also had roles in major Hollywood movies including Terms of Endearment, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Cliffhanger, This is 40,Love is Strange and Interstellar.

The 70-year-old was spotted enjoying a roast dinner at the Wykeham Arms in Kingsgate Street.

Businesses in the area praised production crews for making the filming process as smooth as possible.

Manager of Kingsgate Wines and Provisions, Tim Pride, said: “I think it is always a good thing to have a bit of coverage, we were open when the filming took place and it was very busy and we had a few more people coming in.”

“The filming crew were very efficient and very friendly to deal with all the way through.”
