A HAMPSHIRE college and cathedral received a royal visit from the Earl of Wessex this afternoon.

He visited Peter Symonds College in Winchester to celebrate both the Diamond Anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and to open a new building on campus.

The earl met students who are working towards the award founded by his father 60 years ago.

He was introduced to many students including a team of 22 cheerleaders who performed a special routine.

The earl also formally opened a new college building.

Later the earl made a short car journey from Peter Symonds across the city centre to the cathedral.

There he opened the new learning centre building in The Close which will now be named the Wessex Learning Centre.
