A MAN suffered “life-changing” injuries after a crash involving a lorry and a rubbish truck in Hampshire.

Police shut the A303 between Andover and Popham following the collision, which happened by the turning for Overton and Micheldever Station at about 11.48am yesterday.

The driver of the HGV, a man in his 50s, has been taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Now police are appealing for information to find out the circumstances of the crash.

Initially both sides of the road were closed but the eastbound carriageway was re-opened shortly after the crash. The westbound side remained shut for several hours.

A spokesman for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called to the crash at 11.46am, after a report that a heavy goods vehicle had collided into the back of a rubbish truck, with the HGV driver trapped in his cab.

“We sent an ambulance, one of our officers and the hazardous area response team, and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

“The driver was removed from the cab. He is a male in his 50s and he was taken to North Hampshire Hospital by land ambulance.

“He was taken in a life threatening condition and he has sustained life changing injuries.”

Police are keen to speak to a tractor driver who was driving on the road before the crash and is believed to be an important witness.
