DETAILS of the Watercress Line’s annual sponsored walk along the railway have been revealed.

Over the Alps XXVI aims to raise money for the appeal to restore the British Rail Standard Four 75079 locomotive.

The longest route is the ten miles from Alton to Alresford. Another option is from Medstead and Four Marks to Alresford, about six miles.

The Family Stroll is the three miles from Ropley and downhill or level all the way. Free tea and coffee is available along the route The walks start between 10 and 11am on November 12 and there is a free vintage bus ride back along the route.

There is no need to book in advance, just turn up on the day. Over the Alps refers to the relatively steep inclines on the railway which British Rail closed in 1973.

The society now aims three locomotives. One is in service, one is being overhauled and the Standard Class 4 loco is in need of extensive restoration.

The Mid Hampshire Railway preservation Society which runs the Watercress Line aims to own its own locomotives.

The plan to have its own engines is to ensure that the society does not have to rely so heavily on hiring engines.
