Charity box thief avoids prison sentence
A THIEF who snatched a cash box from Winchester Cathedral has received a suspended jail sentence.
Carl Coles, 42, of Octavia Hill, Stanmore, admitted theft in the church when he appeared at Basingstoke Magistrates Court.
Magistrates heard Coles has a history of offending and was serving a community order at the time.
The bench jailed him for 12 months but suspended for 12 months and Coles was ordered to pay £70 compensation.
