A HAMPSHIRE workout club is helping the community get fit for free.

Michael Day, a police officer, and Laura Perkins, a masters student in fine art at Winchester School of Art, run the Winchester Fit Club in their spare time.

The pair, from Kingsgate, decided to set up the club after moving to the city in 2014.

The sessions are for all regardless or age or ability, and children are also welcome so parents can squeeze in time for a workout.

Laura said: " Michael has run sports clubs and teams for over 10 years, starting with a grass roots Sunday football team in Kent which grew from one team, into seven, which included a semi-professional side.

"When we moved, Michael reached out and trained with some local football teams but soon realised that he wanted something fresh and unique to get his teeth into.

"Michael’s passion for sport and fitness has been a key driver in the decision to set up a local Winchester fitness club.

"Michael has played a high level of football and rugby in his younger years, which were both unfortunately cut short by injury. Last year he qualified as an advanced bootcamp instructor.

"Expense was originally the key driver for a lot of our fit clubbers coming to join our sessions, but they have told us that not only are we the most affordable but we’re also pretty fun."

Michael said: "We love seeing the progress of our clubbers every week, and watching their overall fitness improve along with their confidence physically and socially.

"A lot of the people who have come to fit club started with little or no fitness at all, some returning after having children, and a multitude of other reasons but mainly they wanted something different.

"The other added bonus for us has been meeting such wonderful local people who we now consider to be friends."
