DETAILS of how the Winchester bus station will be revamped have been revealed.

The city council has announced that the improvements to the rundown station will start in early July and be completed by September.

Buses will be re-routed from the semi-pedestrianised High Street for better pedestrian safety and significant improvements to real time bus information are also planned.

The works will include the demolition of one of the disused 1930s garage buildings to enable safer bus movement.

During this phase of work there will be some temporary changes to use of on-street parking in The Broadway to allow for displaced buses.

The bus station will be closed and all bus operations will temporarily take place on The Broadway.

The following changes will take place for the temporary period:

• All pay and display parking spaces will be suspended;

• The parking bays in the middle of The Broadway will be suspended for extra buses;

• Taxi ranks will be relocated to either side of the bus station. The taxi feeder rank in The Broadway will remain;

• three bus stops will be temporarily located in front of the Guildhall;

• An extra bus stop will be added opposite King Alfred Statue (northern side of Broadway);

• Disabled parking in The Broadway will remain.

Post the September reopening, buses will no longer use the High Street but travel through the bus station in a northerly direction along Friarsgate and/or Tanner Street and Silver Hill and use the bus stops behind Marks & Spencer. To enable safe bus movement, loading rights along Tanner Street and the feeder taxi rank in Tanner Street will be removed.

These changes will enable the city council, in agreement with Hampshire County Council, to consider possible future improvements to the High Street.

These changes will not constrain further consideration of bus provision and routes in the town centre as part of engagement work being undertaken by architects JTP, Hampshire County Council’s Transport Study or the Central Winchester Regeneration Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).
