A FUEL spillage has closed part of a Hampshire motorway.

A lorry was travelling south on the M3 between Winchester and Eastleigh just before 6pm when it struck an object in the road, rupturing its fuel tank.

Police say about 70 litres of diesel spilled out on to the carriageway.

The inside lane of the motorway has been closed between junction 11 (Winchester South) and junction 12 (Eastleigh) while the authorities deal with the incident.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) sent two crews from Winchester and Alresford, who used specialist equipment provided by the Environment Agency to deal with the spillage.

A HFRS spokesman said the incident had now been handed over to Highways England.

Queues are building up in the area as a result of the rush-hour spillage but police say they are hopeful that the motorway will be fully open again shortly.
