Chernobyl children welcomed at Winchester

Youngsters have welcomed a party of children from Belarus to their school near Winchester.

The visitors live downwind from the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, which was destroyed in 1986 and the accident’s impact is still felt today.

A trip abroad often improves the youngsters’ health so Chernobyl Children Life Line brings up to 3,000 each year to Britain.

Some are currently staying with families in Winchester and exploring the district. Their first visit was to the city’s fire station in North Walls on Wednesday.

The day after they headed to Owslebury Primary School to meet pupils their own age.

They exchanged songs, shared language, made bookmarks and did some painting. They also had lunch together before a combined assembly.

The group are due to visit Marwell Zoo near Colden Common today and on Tuesday, July 7, they are due to visit historic Serle’s House in Southgate Street, Winchester.
