Winchester planners recommend travellers' site gets green light

Planners are recommending councillors approve a controversial scheme to build a travellers’ site on farmland near Winchester.

George and Veronica Cooper want to convert agricultural land at Highbridge near Colden Common. They have asked to put one mobile home and one touring caravan on the site.

The scheme, which has attracted 18 objections, will go before members of Winchester City Council’s planning sub-committee today.

Otterbourne Parish Council, in its submission, said if this scheme was approved it would create a precedent for a larger travellers’ site. Nearby residents cited concerns over the visibility of the caravan from Highbridge Road and neighbouring properties.

How big is this agricultural land they want to convert, and why do they want to put a couple of caravans on there?
Half a story Echo.

Will they have to pay their rates like the rest of us if the site is approved? At the risk of being accused of being racist, it is common knowledge that wherever there is a travellers' site, local crime in the form of break ins and rogue traders rises dramatically. I wonder how many of the planners that are recommending this site live close to it?

Fully agree - and if you look at tynfield where there is a permenant site it is an total disgrace - the place is filled with burnt down caravans and rubbish - o
including tarmac! Only about 2 bays of the 8 are filled with a home as the rest is a giant rubbish dump. Waste of time and money.

Of course that is not being racist BS! If statistically crime rises when these people are prevailant, then we have a natural right to be suspicious of their motives. If I see travellers anywhere near my house, I let my family know to lock things up, and that includes Rownhams as that has suffered extensively in the past.

This article is factually incorrect and does not portray the true situation. The majority of the comments are appauling and very very short sighted. I cannot believe how judgemental and rude some people can be. Perhaps the writer should do his/her research properly before printing something like this.

I take it you dont live next, or near to a travellers site, nor been on the receiving end of their 'lifestyle'

Its fact that travellers do not pay their way in this world as the rest of us do. When travellers arrive in an area, the crime rate increases, they leave the area full of their rubbish and waste and they generally don’t give a sh*t for anyone else. I know of a few people who have got them selves mixed up with travellers when they came to town. When they decided that they no longer wanted to be with them, they were prevented from leaving the site and if anyone they didn’t know came up the access road, they would hide the person in the back of a transit van and drive around until they were given the all clear.
Nasty, horrible people. Didicoy has the right idea!

actually I know more about actual nomadic travellers than you ever will and know the difference between them and the others you are discribing. Don't tar them all with the same brush

Tar, travellers... now there's a thought.
So, one kind invade private property, disregard the law and leave a pile of s**t behind. They help themselves to anything that's not theirs, intimidate the vulnerable and laugh in the face of justice. As for the other kind, they sit at their (most likely stolen) computers all day and comment on online topics they know naff all about. About as welcome as one of those STD's on another thread.

Brave words - but no substance. Why not correct the story here?

Highbridge is far enough from Winchester for them not to be bothered by the potential problems, it is a bit too close to the railway for my liking, their cable is sure to go walkies bringing chaos to the travelling public.

S/W risk-deal = appropriate I think

True. The residents of Colden Common, Twyford, Otterbourne, Allbrook and other nearby areas, are bound to get extra police patrols though, aren't they?

Alternatively, why not let Cobra Security build their guard dog training facility on the same site? Two birds, one stone etc.

Up here in the north, there are quite a few permenant sites fairly local to where I live and they are all pretty tidy really.

We do have problems with dumped pony carcasses now and then due to the cost of getting rid of them properly! (£250- ish)

The reason they "leave so much rubbish behind" is because they have to settle for short periods before being evicted so why waste time making it look nice? to be booted off in a fortnight? never gonna happen!
