POLICE shot a man wielding a knife with a rubber bullet during an armed stand-off in Hampshire.
The 26-year-old was arrested outside a house after threatening officers, himself and family members with the knife.
He was shot with a “baton round” from a baton gun, a type of handgun carried by armed police for the past ten years.
The drama happened at a house in Cranworth Road, Winchester.
The man was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital following a suspected overdose.
Neighbours said they were woken at about 3.30am by police dogs and police outside. One witness, who did not want to be named, said she heard the man threaten to hurt the residents of the house and any police dogs if they were sent in the building.
She said: “Police kept asking the man to put the knife down but he refused.
“I heard a gunshot but it didn’t sound like a real bullet, and then I saw somebody on the ground and they got him.”
Although police confirmed that family members were present in the house, they did not class it as a hostage situation.
A spokesman for Hampshire police said: “A number of units were deployed, including firearms, dog unit and a negotiator.
“The negotiator is not an indicator of a hostage situation but is usually deployed if threats are being made. A baton round was discharged and the whole incident lasted about 30 minutes.”
It is the second time the police have fired a baton round in Hampshire in the past 18 months, but just the fifth occasion in the past ten years.

Maybe they could use certain posters on this site as target practice!

Was this necessary? If they had waited, where would he have gone? He clearly wasn't a danger to himself, his hostages or the public. This was just gung ho adventuring, and should be stopped- I would dismiss the Officers responsible right now.

This method of controlling people who are a danger to the general public is the only way forward without using real bullets and guaranteeing the safety of all people in the immediate viscinity.

Besides which, if they needed target practice, they would need a smaller target!

But that doesn't change the fact the Police need to deal with situations, 20 yrs ago the man would have been shot or perhaps a Police officer or member of the public seriously hurt if not killed by him, The fact is you know nothing about the circumstances of this other than that reported in here, though it does seem from this the man concerned wanted to hurt someone. So rather than making a massive assumption and saying they should be sacked why not back the Police and be happy the situation was resolved with nobody seriously hurt or killed. If they'd have done nothing and he killed a family member you'd only criticise them for sitting around and letting someone die so get of your high horse.
I'm sorry that so many people here feel that way. This isn't the way our Country used to be 20 years ago.
I won't be here in 20 years, but I hope that you are all happy in the state you create.

I hope rubber bullets can be used more frequently in other public order situations to constrain dangerous people.
