Rugby club home pitch progress
Alresford Rugby Club could be playing on pitches in their home town as soon as next year after a decade of negotiations.
A public meeting of about 80 residents heard the town council has agreed a deal to buy 3.8 acres of land next to Arlebury Park for the club without any cost to the taxpayer.
Planning permission was also approved by Winchester City Council to change the use of the land from agricultural to recreational.
The town council will use its open spaces fund to buy the land in a deal which could cost about £300,000.
Cllr Roy Gentry, council finance chairman, said: “The deal we have done is to purchase 3.8 acres of the north field next to Arlebury Park. The landowner has also offered us the remaining 3.14 acres of north field for lease and we are negotiating that for recreation use.”
The club currently plays in Bighton and has been seeking an Alresford home for a decade.
