TWO people suffered life threatening injuries in a crash on a busy Hampshire road.

They were on a motorised tricycle travelling west on the A31 which hit a crash barrier at Ropley near Winchester about 10.50am on yesterday.

The rider, a 45-year-old man from Ringwood, and the pillion passenger, a 51-year-old man from Bournemouth, were taken by air ambulance to Southampton General Hospital.

The rider remains there in a stable condition, the pillion passenger is in a critical condition.

The road, a major route with a poor safety record, was closed until around 4pm to allow police to carry out an investigation and recovery of the scene.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle driving prior to it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Adrienne Jerram at the Fratton roads policing unit on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

So happy to hear the guys are safe in hospital now... It was a bad crash :-(.... We stopped just after the accident happened to help out. Lucky for the guys an off duty Paramedic was coming the other way and stopped to administer brilliant first aid and organise us all. At least eight people stopped to help. What was done by all that stopped, I'm sure helped to save their lives.

Thoughts are with the injured.
Were they wearing helmets?
Trikes do not require a motorbike licence or helmets to be worn, most people I see riding these things are middle aged men wearing bandanas.

Hi Huey and Richieroo.. Yes, both guys where wearing helmets, Leather jackets, gloves and heavy duty boots... Certainly the helmets protected their heads and absorbed some of the impact.. without them, they would not have had a chance.

I have seen my cousin this evening and would like to say he was wearing a helmet and a protective jacket which thankfully saved his life. Thank you to all who stopped to help, he is very grateful.
