Businesses to get boost from PSP Southampton Boat Show 2012

Business boost from boat show Business boost from boat show

BUSINESSES are hoping that the forthcoming PSP Southampton Boat Show will bring in floods of cash.

While organisers of the show predict an extra £12 million will be generated by its presence, the chief executive of the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, Jimmy Chestnutt, expects many pockets to be lined because of it.

Mr Chestnutt said: “There’s a direct and positive impact in the immediate area to the Boat Show . Most of the hotels and restaurants see this as a bumper month.

“Most of their profit comes from these three weeks the week before, during and after the show.”

He added that not only is it those involved in the boat building industry who add to the city’s revenue but also those who come to visit Southampton .

“It’s those people running, building the pontoons and people exhibiting here, it has enormous impact in terms of transport, hotels, restaurants, businesses,” he said.

“Those who are here for three weeks staying in the hotels, they tend to have a wider impact.

“The visitors may stay and have a look around but they tend to wine and dine and then go home.”

For Mr Chestnutt the boat show’s presence shows how important the boat building industry is to the area.

The chamber was one of the founding members of the show when it was first set up in the early 1960s.

“We wanted something to rival London’s show and to provide something that was affordable for business in the area. It was very much a local effort,” he said.

“The boat show has always been the highlight on the Southampton Chamber calendar. It is one of the best events of the year, we think.”

The Chamber of Commerce is holding the boat show lunch at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel.

Gold medallist Dani King will be attending while guest speaker is Don Wales, grandson of Sir Malcolm Campbell and the nephew of Donald Campbell, who has broken various land and water speed records.

The PSP Southampton Boat Show runs from Friday, September 14, to Monday September 23 at Mayflower Park/Town Quay , Southampton.

I bet the misery and moaner from Totton will be on here shortly complaining about the traffic and that he cant get to or from work.
.
Success sometimes comes at a price but it is one that should be "paid" for such a prestigious show with great organisers.
.
Seldom ever agree with J Chestnutt, however, i do make an exception about this

If you mean me then I can say that if you think its good for Southampton to fill up the city with snobby yachties who fill up the car parks and turn honest shoppers away from the stores who desperately need their custom then I am guilty as charged.
Most of these snobby yachties would not demean themselves to shop in ordinary shops in Southampton and to hold this snobfest in the busiest part of the City beggars belief.

Jealousy will get you nowhere. Welcome all yuppies, I will go along just to see how the other half live, but I am a realist, I couldn't afford a flag staff but I have nothing but admiration for the way people with money can spend it, I however can only dream that those Lottery numbers come up and then I would join them and look down on the rest of you.

How are they snobs? Yes, the roads become a nightmare for us living nearby, but we know the back routes to avoid this.

The Car parking charges go to the Council and bring in needed funding. Are you saying send the Boat Show to Portsmouth?

As a positive note, place a picture of your greatest dream, something you imagine you'll never have on your kitchen cupboard and look at it each day. Then say to yourself each time you look at it..... 'I will have this one day'.

What a stupid, crass comment Mr 51! You've obviously got no idea what the Boat Show means to many people who live and work in the Southampton Area. My whole family are involved in the marine industry here, my husband sells boats for a major British powerboat builder, my son has completed a 4 year apprenticeship in traditional boatbuilding, my daughter has a weekend job in a chandlery, I work technical fabric sales. Yes a normal, hardworking, local family. We consider the Southampton Boat Show "our" show and can't wait to meet friends, colleagues and customers who come from all over the country (and the world) to the great city of Southampton. Grow up and get that bag of chips off your shoulder!

Ah yes but I have to work and park in Southampton and the boat show causes nothing but problems and brings little but chaos to the city.

On the contrary I can go back to the start of the Boat show many years ago and then it was run by boating people for boating people.
Now it has been hijacked by big business and corporate expense accounts and has moved out of the realm of the genuine sailors and into the millionaire bracket and I am sure that we dont have many of those in Southampton so where is the city going to reap actual return on the sale of boats and ancilliarys.
Let Portsmouth have it at least they have a bigger waterfront than us becuase they havent wasted it like Southampton.

Geoff, the main point is the Boat show does bring additional income and jobs. People come to Southampton from all over the world and stay in Hotels, eat food etc all of which helps with the local economy.

I admit traffic does cause a small issue, but the positives outweigh the negatives.

I live almost next to it and it can be very frustrating trying to get out of town for meetings etc. But I look at the bigger picture.
