TWO captains of industry in their chosen profession became doctors today before speaking to hundreds of Southampton youngsters embarking on their careers.

Fashion icon Barry Laden (above) joins media maverick Paul Smith in receiving honorary doctorates from Southampton Solent University for their contribution to the city.

Barry received a Doctor of Design in recognition of his contribution to the fashion industry while Paul was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Media.

In 1999 Barry opened The Laden Showroom in Brick Lane in East London and now supports and sells for over 65 designers.

Barry said: “I am so pleased to accept this honorary award from Southampton Solent University and particularly enjoy working with the students.

“There are many fashion courses across our universities but Southampton Solent has taken a unique approach that has resulted in a rare, excellent provision for students which places the University's School of Fashion at the top of its field.”

Founder and owner of Celador Entertainment, Paul has led the business over the last thirty-five years and was instrumental in bringing Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to the world's television screens. He went on to be the executive producer for the Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire.

Paul said: “I am really delighted to accept this honorary award from Southampton Solent University. It is a chance for industry to play a role in educating the next generation and I am looking forward to sharing my expertise with the students.”

Tomorrow, sees Daily Echo Editor-in-Chief Ian Murray receive a doctorate alongside Pawl Hawkins, the founder of Hampshire company Hawk-Eye innovations which allowed goal-line adjudication in football matches.
