SCHOOL children have been marking the 800th anniversary of an historic church.

Wellow Primary School pupils have become ambassadors of St Margaret’s at East Wellow and they have been busy carrying out cleaning duties at the ancient building and learning more about its history.

School head Beth Larcombe explained: “Two children from each class went to the church to help with the church’s daily duties. They cleaned and polished the pews, made some beautiful flower arrangements, polished the brass and helped with the gardening. While the youngsters endeavoured to ensure the church was gleaming, they had a chance to talk to some local experts about the church including the Rev Chris Pettet and Michael Sleigh from the Wellow History Society. “The children were enthralled by the stories about the church and were amazed to think about all the history the church has seen over the last 800 years,” said Mrs Larcombe, adding that a display of children’s work on the celebrations will go on display at the church.

“This is such an important anniversary for Wellow and the children are thrilled to help mark the occasion,” she concluded.
