THE HEADTEACHER of an Hampshire infant school has "categorically" denied claims that a pupil has contracted bird flu.

Earlier today, reports on social media suggested that a child at Knights Enham Infant School in Andover had been diagnosed with virus after suffering from 'flu like symptoms'.

The post, which appeared on Facebook group, Spotted in Andover, contained claims by an anonymous parent that the child was "diagnosed with bird flu" and had a temperature "as high as 42.3 degrees".

At that time Head Teacher of the school, Sue Barry, labeled the report as "unsubstantiated" but in a follow-up statement she has now rubbished the claims.

Mrs. Barry said: "I have spoken to medical staff at Winchester Hospital who were involved in the treatment of the child and I can say that they were diagnosed with flu and it is categorically not bird flu.

"It is very unfortunate that it has led to a great deal of unwarranted concern for our parents.

"The school has texted and contacted all of the parents, staff and governors to tell them that there is no cause for concern."
