Colleges are holding a number of events to show what they have to offer apprentices.

As part of Apprenticeship Week, Fareham College is holding a networking event this evening for employers to find out about the wide-ranging benefits of apprenticeships on businesses and the wider economy.

It runs from 6pm-8pm and employers can visit the campus to find out more about the advantages of taking on an apprentice, as well as the ways in which they can nominate their existing apprentices for high-profile awards.

City College Southampton, one of the region’s leading apprenticeship providers, is hosting an open day on Saturday from 10am to noon.

It saw 245 apprentices start their training this academic year. Its success rates stand at 10 per cent above the national average.

Apprenticeships are an opportunity for students to ‘earn as they learn’ and offer career progression opportunities, while being approved by the country’s top universities and higher education providers.

The college has a dedicated recruitment team which guides candidates through the apprenticeship process, from their initial enquiry to completing their training programme.

City College provides more than 40 different types of apprenticeships. It has unrivalled links with local business, including Carnival UK, Griffon Hoverwork, Lovell and Quality Finish Patisserie Ltd.

Tim Davison, managing director of Quality Finish Patisserie Ltd, said: “I feel the apprentice scheme is paramount to my business because I can mould young people into the skills which I need for my business.

“I would go as far as saying it’s been the reason for its success. That’s why an ex-apprentice is now running my business.”

Sarah Stannard, principal of City College Southampton, said: “City College goes the extra mile to help young people take their first steps into work and successfully complete their apprenticeships with the region’s leading businesses.

“Here students get much more than just a qualification, they get the support and extra help they need to succeed.”
