STUDENTS who do that bit extra were honoured at a glittering awards ceremony.
The Southampton University Students Union (SUSU) Excellence in Volunteering Awards has become a popular fixture in the academic calendar where students who go the extra mile for others are rewarded. The awards ceremony took place at The Cube venue on campus at the University of Southampton.
The event is designed to recognise the many varieties of volunteering that take place within the Students’ Union and honour outstanding individuals who have shown enthusiasm and great personal drive.
The awards started with the students themselves being invited to nominate both societies and individuals who they thought deserved recognition.
Organisers set up the awards in a bid to help students’ employability, particularly demonstrating their transferable skills along with academic qualifications that they could take into the workplace.
Nominations were received in a variety of categories including Commitment, Innovation,; Engagement, Leadership; Impact, and Collaboration, Amongst other awards the student community was asked to nominate individuals to receive The Volunteer award - billed as the ‘ultimate’ gong of the evening.
Nominees for this category were judged to be truly exceptional, standing out from the crowd for their contribution.
The ten winners of the award were shown to have excelled in their involvement and have achieved significant results as a result of their work.
It was then down to a panel to whittle down the scores of nominations to a shortlist. The awards ceremony was hosted by Amelia Mayes and awards were presented to the winners and two runners-up by the Sabbatical Officers.
