FAKE tan is one of the more unusual materials used in a display of student artwork which goes on show to the public this week.

Eastleigh College students studying the Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media are exhibiting their final year work in show entitled ‘Via’ until June 25.

‘Via’ was chosen by the students to represent their journey from the college to go on to study at university in September.

Sophie Wilson, created a display of wooden plinths painted with fake tan.

“My piece, On the Shelf, was inspired by wood stains that people use to make their furniture look more expensive, like the St. Tropez tan of the furniture world. Painting my furniture with fake tan is intended to make people question how they arrange things,” said Sophie Sophie is going to study BA (Hons) Fine Art Sculpture at the University of Brighton in September, and plans to train as a teacher after she completes her degree.

Oher projects using resources including film, sound, balloons, paint, paper, digital technology, photography, sculpture and even concrete.

Sebastiane Hegarty, course leader at the college, commented: “What I really like about the students’ work this year is the amount of thought that has gone into the artwork. It isn’t just about appearance; it’s about thinking and doing.”

This year all the students on the course who applied gained university places.

Via is open to view from 10am to 4pm daily (closed Sunday) at the Desborough Campus, Eastleigh College.
