A JAZZ group formed by Hampshire students won acclaim at a national event.

Music students at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College (RTSFC) impressed judges at the Music for Youth’s National Festival in Birmingham Town Hall.

The group made up of Adam Coffin, Alex Lockheart, August Fox, Jack Gallacher, Joshua Attrill, Matthew Chappell and Quantae Ramdin - were praised for their creativity, ability to improvise, cohesive sound and energy.

The group won a Certificate of Achievement for Innovation and were nominated for further development and mentoring from the Music for Youth judges.

Student Alex Lockheart said: “This is a great way to finish off my sixth form education and I’d like to thank Music for Youth for allowing us to showcase original music.”

Sam Adams, leader of Jazz at RTSFC, said: “This group have blossomed beyond belief, even composing and developing their own pieces. They are a credit to themselves and the college, and have inspired many other musicians in the department to work even harder on their music.”
