FIREFIGHTERS were called to a Southampton school after a hockey player hit a fire alarm during a match.

A crew from Redbridge were called at 6.30pm to King Edward VI School believing a serious fire had broken out after they had an alarm through from one of the red call points used on the school site in emergencies.

But a spokesman for the crew said when they arrived they found a very apologetic and “sheepish” hockey team as one of their female players had hit a hockey puck with such force it had broken the alarm last night.

The spokesman said: “It was quite an unusual one. The call point was completely damaged so she must have really whacked it.

"We switched off that particular alarm and an engineer is going to fix it today but we have also recommended that the school cover up the call points during the hockey matches from now on.”
