THERE was a double celebration at a city school after it achieved exam success and a 'good' Ofsted report.

Oasis Academy Mayfield was praised for its quality of teaching and learning, leadership and the behaviour of pupils after its latest inspection.

It comes after the school which has 723 students aged 11-16 on its registers was told it needed to improve at its previous inspection in 2014.

Since then they have worked hard to put improvements in place and have even been ranked in the UK's top 20 schools for the progress students make ahead of their Year 9 Key Stage 4 exams - scooping a prestigious Education Outcomes Award from the Schools, Students and Teachers network.

They also won a PiXL E4Education Award for students' outstanding GCSE results last summer.

The school's hard work was recognised by Ofsted who commended the school for positive relationships between teachers and pupils, who were described as thoughtful, well behaved and happy.

Inspectors also praised them for consistently good results in English and maths, while disadvantaged pupils and those with special needs are making more progress than ever before.

The report said: "The principal is passionate about wanting the very best outcomes for all pupils at Oasis Academy Mayfield. His clear leadership has led to rapid improvements in all aspects of the school’s work since the previous inspection.

"He and the associate principal share an infectious enthusiasm and determination for continual improvement that is admired and embraced by teachers and pupils.

"Consequently, pupils’ progress, although not yet outstanding, has improved significantly since the previous inspection. Parents positively endorse the work of the school."

Principal Phil Humphreys said: "We are extremely proud of our progress to date and Ofsted’s judgement highlights our overriding commitment to provide excellence for everyone, focussed around entitling our students, staff and community to an exceptional education.

"This reflects the dedication and hard work of our talented staff, in securing this judgement. They, along with the students and families of Mayfield, deserve to have a good school in their community.

"The report is a testament to the commitment by staff to provide lessons that are never less than good and the best academic outcomes for our students during their time at Mayfield."

Southampton Itchen MP Royston Smith added: "Mayfield Academy's results and good Ofsted report is a remarkable achievement and a great testament to the principal Phil Humphreys and his teaching team but not least the dedication and the hard work of their students. They should all be really proud of what they have done."
